Lip augmentation procedures increase the size of the lips to make them fuller and can also be used to define the vermilion border of the lips. Upper and lower lips can be treated individually or at the same time.

Lip augmentation can be accomplished either surgically or with the injection of temporary (dermal) fillers. Autologous fat injections to the lips are a longer lasting alernative to the dermal fillers.

During the fat injection procedure, fat is harvested from another area of the body, usually the abdomen, and the fat is separated, purified and injected with small needles into the lips. Because not all of the fat will survive, the lips are over-corrected at first so that the final result will meet your expectations. The procedure can be done as an outpatient with some light sedation anesthesia. This is often performed in conjunction with other procedures. The result can last 6 months to several years. Occasionally patients may wish to repeat the procedure.

Unlike days past when only the rich and famous consulted plastic surgeons across the country - and even the world - patients now are willing to travel beyond their local communities to find the plastic surgeon that best meets their needs. With the advent of the internet, that world has now become smaller and the idea of traveling for plastic surgery is no longer considered unusual.
Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, involves the removal of fat usually along with excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes. These features may make you look older and more tired than you feel, and may even interfere with your vision. This procedure doesn't involve crow's feet or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under your eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows.

Candidates suitable for eyelid surgery:
Blepharoplasty can enhance your looks and give your self confidence but won't make you look entirely different. So be realistic in your expectations.

1. The best candidates for eyelid surgery are men and women who are physically healthy, psychologically stable.
2. Most are 35 or older.
3. If droopy, baggy eyelids run in your family, you may decide to have eyelid surgery at a younger age.
4. The medical conditions which make blepharoplasty more risky are thyroid problems such as hypothyroidism and graves' diseases, dry eye or lack of sufficient tears, high blood pressure or other circulatory disorders, cardiovascular disease.
5. If you have a detached retina or glaucoma. Check with your ophthalmologist before you have surgery.

When eyelid surgery is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor. But you should always expect risks and discuss with your plastic surgeon about the pros and cons involved.

Blepharoplasty may take one to three hours. For this procedure, the plastic surgeon makes incisions following the natural lines of your eyelids; in the creases of your upper lids, and just below the lashes in your lower lids. The incisions can extend into the crow's feet or laugh lines at the outer corners of your eyes.

If you have a pocket of fat beneath your lower eyelids but don't need to have any skin removed, your plastic surgeon may perform a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. In this procedure the incision is made inside your lower eyelids, leaving no visible scar. It is usually performed on younger patients with thicker, more elastic skin.

Types of Face Lift Procedures

  • Oct. 9th, 2009 at 4:58 PM

The Mini Lift (also referred to as a Short scar face lift) is a less invasive procedure with a shorter recovery time than its more traditional cousin, the full face lift. The Mini face Lift is an ideal procedure for women who are just starting to note deepening lines on their face, sagging of the skin over their lower face and jaw line, and perhaps some laxity of their neck.

You may be a good candidate for this procedure if you are a woman in your early 40s and don't want to wait for noticeable signs of aging to alter your appearance. The Mini Lift is also a useful secondary procedure if you have previously had a face lift and are starting to notice the signs of age again making an appearance.

A Modified Face Lift is the right choice if you are a woman in your late 40s or early 50s and notice more laxity in your face and neck but still not very much. You surgeon will help you determine whether you are the right candidate for this procedure.

In a Modified Face Lift, the incision made to the face is similar to the Mini Lift but extends behind the ear, and there may be need for an additional incision under the chin. This allows Dr. Lofman to reposition the fallen soft tissues and tighten the lax neck muscles as well as remove more redundant skin than a Mini-Lift would allow.

The Full Face Lift is designed for you if older than 55 or have significant laxity of the soft tissues of your face and neck. While it requires a longer incision, skillful surgical technique ensures the incision is placed inconspicuously.

The Full Face Lift effectively restores your youthful appearance and should give you back at least 15 years that time has taken away. This is achieved by tightening the underlying lax muscles, doing so in a way that does not leave the typical signs of a face lift.

A face lift may also be combined with other facial procedures such as eyelid surgery or a brow lift. During your private consultation with your chosen plastic surgeon, he/she will explain in full detail the varying aspects of these different procedures and what other techniques may be available to help you achieve realistic results.

So What Are Dermal fillers?

  • Oct. 9th, 2009 at 1:12 PM

Filler agent treatments for facial aging are one of the most rapidly growing areas of cosmetic medicine. When a plastic surgeon evaluates patients who desire facial rejuvenation, they consider a three prong approach. Surgery and skin care can be vital to obtaining the best result, but the third prong includes fillers. They are a wonderful adjunct in many patients. They can improve the result of surgery in most, but in some, fillers can provide enough improvement that surgery can be delayed.

So what are Dermal fillers? They are products designed to be injected into the skin to correct and soften lines or furrows. They can also be used to increase lip volume. There is a dizzying array of products available that are made from different substances. Some products are derived from animals, and other from cadavers. Still others are bio-engineered. I currently prefer Juvederm. It is made from a substance called hyaluronic acid, which is a natural component of human skin. There is no risk of allergy, so skin testing is not required in advance of treatment. It is a gel formulation, unlike some earlier generation products that are particulate in character. The gel injects smoothly and does not result in lumps or bumps under the skin.

In the past, the lack of longevity of result was a concern for many patients considering filler treatments. Juvederm generally lasts between nine and twelve months in the vast majority of patients. While it is not permanent, most things in life do require maintenance.

Types of Breast Implants

  • Oct. 8th, 2009 at 6:17 PM
Saline Breast Implants - The saline implant has an exterior sack made of solid silicone, which is filled with a sterile saline solution — like the salt-water solution that is administered for intravenous fluids. One of the advantages of this solution is its safety. Should the implant for some reason leak, the saline just gets absorbed by your body, as would the intravenous fluids used during, and after surgery. Yet another advantage of the saline breast implants is a very low infection rate, which is usually less than one to two percent.

Silicone Breast Implants - These are implants that are filled with a silicone gel. More than 1.5 million American women currently have silicone breast implants. Some people feel that the silicone implant results in a more natural appearing breast.

Cohesive Gel Implants - Cohesive gel implants are silicone implants that are filled with a thicker silicone gel that holds its shape and form like a "gummy bear." If you cut into a standard gel implant, the liquid silicone gel escapes from the implant shell. In contrast, when you cut into a cohesive gel implant, the implant itself maintains its shape and integrity. These shaped implants are designed with a focus upon a natural look, rather than for enlargement. Furthermore, gummy bear implants maintain their shape in an upright position that decreases the incidence of folding of the implant shell or rippling. If a cohesive gel implant ruptures, it maintains both its shape and integrity.

What Is Egg Freezing?

  • Oct. 6th, 2009 at 4:09 PM

Egg freezing is a breakthrough technology that allows women to freeze and store their eggs until a pregnancy is desired. At that time, the eggs are thawed, fertilized and transferred to the uterus as embryos.

Who May Benefit?

Many women today are postponing childbearing because they are focused on a career, are returning to school, or because they simply haven’t met the right person. For these women, egg freezing is revolutionary, not just in its technology, but in the life choices it allows them to make.

Over 50,000 reproductive-aged women are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments typically lead to infertility by destroying the eggs. While options vary depending on age, type of cancer and cancer-treatment plan, egg freezing can provide these women the opportunity to preserve their fertility.

And finally, egg freezing can be useful for individuals with religious or moral objections to storing frozen embryos that remain following a routine IVF cycle.

Wrinkles explained

The lines that appear between your brows (glabellar lines) actually result from muscle movement and the passage of time. You may have heard the expression "wearing your emotions on your sleeve," but in reality you wear them on your face. If you're angry or annoyed, for example, you knit your brows together. Underneath your skin, your facial muscles contract, cause a pleating of the overlying skin, and then, as anyone can see, you're frowning.

After years of crinkling and wrinkling, those glabellar lines start to linger longer and can become more pronounced. For women, whose faces tend to be more animated than men's, and whose skin is typically more delicate, these lines may appear exaggerated and more permanent.

BOTOX can help

Fortunately, there is a way to reduce moderate to severe glabellar lines. Treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic can visibly smooth and soften moderate to severe frown lines between your brows. An improvement can be seen within days and may last up to 4 months, although results may vary. In clinical trials, nearly 90% of men and women surveyed rated the improvement in the appearance of frown lines between their brows as moderate to better 1 month after treatment.

The beauty of a BOTOX® treatment is that it's a simple, 10-minute, non-surgical process. A few tiny injections, and within days there can be a noticeable improvement in the moderate to severe frown lines between the brows that can last up to 4 months. Results may vary. And there’s no recovery time. You can even do it on your lunch break.

One should always be aware that any cosmetic procedure, even non surgical procedures such as BOTOX injections carry with them some level of risk. It is very important that anyone considering a cosmetic procedure ensure that he/she fully understands the chosen procedure and has done research, including consulting with a qualified, experienced and skilled specialist such as San Jose California based Plastic surgeon Dr Creasman. When you meet with your surgeon, be sure you have all of your questions answered. Research on the internet is also a good source of information. Should I have Breast Augmentation Surgery?

  • Sep. 30th, 2009 at 4:19 PM
For women with particularly small breasts, the augmentation mammoplasty, or Breast Augmentation surgery is a procedure designed to enhance and improve the appearance of the breasts. During the augmentation mammoplasty, the surgeon inserts an implant with a silicone shell filled with saline (salt water) behind the breast or behind the muscle of the chest wall through a small incision. The surgeon will use a small incision at the lower border of the areola which leaves an inconspicuous scar and the most popular placement for breast implants is behind the muscle of the chest wall. This gives a more natural appearance, keeps the implant soft and most importantly makes it easier for the radiologist to read a mammogram.

Often the candidates for this procedure are women who have experienced breast shrinkage following pregnancies. The procedure can restore fullness and reduce sagging. Additionally, it is often the treatment of choice for women who have been naturally endowed with small breasts.

During the initial consultation, the patient and plastic surgeon together decide what size implant will look best. The size of the implant is limited to the degree of stretch the existing breast can tolerate. The goal is to create a natural looking breast that is proportional to the size of the individual.

As is the case with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with augmentation. Sometimes, the breasts may become somewhat more firm -- a fact attributable to the tightening of a capsule which forms around the implant. Today, the occurrence of firmness is very low. Additionally, a small number of patients note some loss of sensation in the nipple area. Also, one must realize the implants are a man-made device and can leak, requiring replacement.

It is highly important that anyone considering any surgical procedure do his/her research, and consult with an experienced, skilled specialist such as Plastic Surgeon in Chicago Dr G Tresley. Be sure and have all you questions answered and you fully understand your chosen procedure prior to having the surgery. Taking these important steps can mean the difference between a positive surgery experience and a nightmare. One should utilize all available resources when researching and learning about surgery procedures. There are many websites on the internet that provide information about plastic and cosmetic procedures. The best site I have found is lookingyourbest.com. Skin Cancer Recontstruction

  • Sep. 30th, 2009 at 2:31 PM

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 500,000 new cases are reported each year-and the incidence is rising faster than any other type of cancer. While skin cancers can be found on any part of the body, about 80 percent appear on the face, head, or neck, where they can be disfiguring as well as dangerous.

The primary cause of skin cancer is ultraviolet radiation -most often from the sun, but also from artificial sources like sunlamps and tanning booths. In fact, researchers believe that our quest for the perfect tan, an increase in outdoor activities, and perhaps the thinning of the earth's protective ozone layer are behind the alarming rise we're now seeing in skin cancers.

As I get older, I worry about the effects that gravity and aging will have upon my face. At 38 I have already begun to see the fine lines, wrinkles and crows feet that goes along with getting older. As an entertainer, my face is important to me - after all it is my face people see in the media.

I know that invasive facelift surgery is not required, my gut feeling tells me there is something more I could do to restore the youthful look to my face. I did some research on the Internet and discovered BOTOX Injections in Los Angeles. After searching for more information, I found a Cosmetic Surgeon in Los Angeles who took the time to help me understand how BOTOX works and what results I can expect from having BOTOX injections.

BOTOX® is the most common minimally invasive cosmetic procedure with 3.8 million treatments in the U.S. in 2005. Botox works by improving the appearance of wrinkles in the face that are caused by muscle contraction. There is no down time required for BOTOX. It is relatively painless and results are apparent within a few days. The effects of Botox typically last approximately four months.

It is always a good idea that you do your research and consult with a specialist prior to having any procedure. All procedures carry some level of risk and it is important tot he success of the procedure that you have all your questions answered and fully understand your chosen procedure before hand. Immediate breast reconstruction saves the patient at least one subsequent operation, and has been shown to have a significant psychological benefit, as the patient never experiences a mastectomy defect.

Plastic Surgery Q&A – Facial Rejuvenation

  • Sep. 22nd, 2009 at 5:00 PM
My sister is always telling me about how she hates her face. She doesn't like the way her skin is red and blotchy, and she has a lot of fine lines and wrinkles. Is there anything that can be done to help her?

There are several procedures available to help your wife see a difference in her skin condition, and procedures that can help treat fine lines and wrinkles. These two issues and related, but can be treated differently. Red skin and “blotchy” skin problems are usually treated with laser skin resurfacing and IPL (Intense Pulse Light Waves). There are several different types of laser treatments, and we will examine a few here:

Photoderm Laser/Photofacial/IPL- This light source laser effectively treats many concerns on various parts of the body including red blotchiness or blood vessels, irregular pigmentation, fine lines or general sun damage of the skin! There is relatively no downtime with this procedure.

Active FX Laser – This laser treatment can be utilized for everything from fine lines to the not-so-fine lines! Sun spots to sagging skin! This non-ablative laser produces similar results to ablative lasers, such as the CO2, without the downtime associated with them. Below is a before and after photo that illustrates the results of this laser treatment.

Fraxel Laser – This laser is a new approach to "resurfacing" the skin with many of the benefits of an ablative laser but virtually no downtime. This laser treatment eliminates old epidermal cells (brown spots or age spots) while penetrating deep into the dermis to improve fine lines, wrinkles and general skin discoloration. Your skin will be softer, smoother, fresher, with improved quality, tone and texture. Stretch marks and scars can also be successfully treated with this laser. Below is photo depicting the before and after results of a Fraxel Laser Treatment.

These are just a few of the many laser treatments available for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation. New York Dermatologist Dr Karyn Grossman recommends learning more about Laser Skin rejuvenation before electing to have a laser treatment.

Fine lines and wrinkles can be treated solely with laser skin rejuvenation, however there are other alternatives and depending on your skin condition, and other factors, one of these procedures may be right for you.

Lipotransfer - By removing fat from one area of the body where it is not wanted and injecting it into other areas where it is needed, you can achieve a soft filling effect unlike any other filler substances. By storing some of the fat and injecting it periodically, your enhanced appearance will be consistent. Fat can be used to plump up lips, fill in the nasal labial folds or the hollows of the cheeks, to "create” cheekbones and plump up hands.

Filler Lift - Dermal fillers such as restylane, Juvederm, Botox and Sculptra are commonly used in cosmetic dermatology as an instant esthetic treatment. A dermal filler injection is one of the few procedures to provide immediate improvement or enhancement of appearance with little or no down-time. There are many different fillers available today. However, it is not uncommon for physicians to suggest the use of one product for the treatment of multiple areas of concern.

As always, before choosing to have any procedure it is recommended you research your desired procedure(s) and locate a skilled, experienced and qualified specialist such as a cosmetic dermatologist. Be sure to schedule a consultation and have all your questions answered.

There are several websites out there, and alot of them have accurate , in depth information. One excellent site I have discovered for researching both surgical and non-surgical plastic and cosmetic surgery procedures is Lookingyourbest.com. Here you can not only find procedural and safety information, but they also offer a free service to help you locate the right plastic surgeon for your procedure. Remember, Taking the proper steps and understanding all this is involved with any procedure can mean the difference between a positive experience and a nightmare.

Unlike days past when only the rich and famous consulted plastic surgeons across the country - and even the world - patients now are willing to travel beyond their local communities to find the plastic surgeon that best meets their needs. Tummy Tuck in Newport Beach California

  • Aug. 24th, 2009 at 3:35 PM
Recently I had lost alot of weight. when looking at myself in the mirror, I notice I have lost all the weight from around my legs and my breasts, but the tummy fat and excess skin is still there. I work out regularly, but nothing helps.

I decided to do some research on the internet so see what I could try. Then i stumbled on to this website of a plastic surgeon in Newport, California. I was apprehensive to trust my body to any surgery, but something had to be done, I didn't like what I saw in the mirror. After much thought and more research I decided to go see this plastic surgeon and ask some questions. I went to the consultation convinced this was not going to help me. After talking with the doctor, looking at before and after photos of tummy tuck surgeries, I was amazed at the results and decided to have the surgery done for me.

It has been three months since I had the surgery, and I feel great! I have nice firm tummy and I am no longer self conscious about my body. I have my self confidence back, and I can once again wear a bikini and not feel embarrassed.
For Christmas i had a nice surprise that my husband is going to get me a breast reduction. He is tired of me complaining that my back hurts and that nothing is helping it. He and I have been going to the gym and that is not helping me either.
So my husband and i went to look on line to see what was out there. We were looking for the one that is most convenient for us. Through the results we found this plastic surgeon in Newport Beach, California. We also were able to get our question and concerns answered. We have looked at pictures of other who had the procedure done.
Well it has been 6 months and i feel great and i can run with my kids and not be hurting. Thank you to my husband for giving me that gift for Christmas.

My son was born with a deformed nose and i have been trying to help him with his teasing, that he gets from neighbors, that his self esteem in really low right now. As a mom i hate to see your child go through all the teasing.
So i went to our family doctor and i asked him what i could do to help my son with his nose. He told me to go on line and look up Rhinoplasty and you will be able to find the doctor you feel will be the best one for you and your son. So i did and i found this plastic surgeon in Newport Beach, California. I deiced to make an appointment to have my preliminary consultation. While I was there I was able to ask question to see his work that has been done on other patients. I was really amazed what the doctor has done on the other patients.

My son is happy and he can go play with his friends, he has his self confidence back.
